graveyard
Graveyard poetry began with a number of pre-Romantic English poets of the 18th century characterised by their gloomy meditations on mortality, skulls and coffins, epitaphs and worms in the context of the graveyard. They were often Christian clergymen who were often focused on contemplating human morality. Some of the main points for this periodwas to focus on the typical unidentified people. Graveyard poets were also romantic poets because of the reflection on emotional states shown in their poetry. This graveyard movement took place during the 1700s and was highly criticized by most scholars.
Oliver Goldsmith lived from 1730-1774. He was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet. Noone knows where he was really born. In 1760 Goldsmith began to publish a series of letters in the Public
Ledger under the title The Citizen of the World. There was a statue of Goldsmith at his Trinity College where he attended school.

Literary Elements
The main literary element in this poem is irony. We as human beings were belived to be made by a powerful and amazing god who created so many things yet was wise and not self seeking. But we take advantage of certain things and feel that we are superior. This poem is ironic because people of such great creation although we are supposed to love like the god who created us loves us we end up lovoing and idolizoing only ourselves and end up as the devil.
